Transport, Morning Tea, Lunch, 2 hr River Cruise
Thursday 19th September MT, L
We have a brand new and exciting experience for you all; we will be leaving a little earlier to get to Tuakau stopping for morning tea along the way. We arrive at Tuakau Jetty by midday to board the luxurious houseboat Discovery 1, a rock solid palace on water. We will enjoy a lovely boxed lunch on board in between cups of tea and coffee. We depart historic Lapwood Landing and cruise upriver along the scenic and the calm waters of the “Riverland” with banks either in parks or bush. Following in the wake of the old Paddle Streamers that used to carry supplies upriver to Hamilton before the roads and rail were established. This section of the Waikato River has a considerable amount of early New Zealand history, including the Maori Wars of the late 1860s and WW2. As we cruise up the river, we will pass the location of the old Tuakau Sand Plant, look carefully under the trees, skeletons of abandoned barges. Learn about the tragic Arthur Alan Thomas story and the history of the Tuakau Bridge. There is so much to see and learn don’t miss this one.
