DAY ONE                                                                   L , D

This morning we will be putting the self-proclaimed 'best place to eat in Putaruru' through its paces when we stop at The Wooden Farmer for a scrumptious morning tea. Then on to Taupo for a Jolly good time, cruising Lake Taupo in comfort and style as we venture out to the famous Mine Bay Māori rock carvings, which have recently undergone some restoration work by the original artist of the carving, Matahi Brightwell, in February 2019. Brightwell led a small team to clean and re-sculpt the smaller carvings surrounding the giant carving of Ngātoroirangi to return them to their original state. Spectacular views will flow on our day of nautical fun, sizzling bbq and lunching while we cruise on one of New Zealand's maritime treasures.

After our cruise we will continue by caoch around the great lake arriving at the Chateau to deliver our luggage before driving the magnificent Mount Ruapehu road to the 'Bruce' car park and then, weather permitting, take a ride on the new Sky Waka Gondola, taking in the views. Our accommodation for the night is the Grand Tongariro Chateau located at the base of Mt Ruapehu, a lovely nostalgic destination offering great views of Tongariro and Ruapehu. We will enjoy a three-course meal in the warm atmospheric restaurant and relax in the Chateau lounge with the crackling fire and piano playing in the background.
