DAY ONE D
Today will see us departing to Nelson. On arrival we will discover one of New Zealand’s most stunning ecological treasures at The Brook Waimārama Sanctuary. The walk along the loop track begins at the visitor centre, where a friendly guide introduces you to the Sanctuary’s rich natural heritage. Stroll through tranquil native forest and listen for birds like tūī, bellbird, fantail, and the rare South Island robin or tomtit. Hear the inspiring story of the kiwi pukupuku, recently reintroduced into this protected haven. Keep watch for tuatara, giant wētā, and soaring kererū. Whether you're a nature novice or enthusiast, your guide’s insights and storytelling will leave you with a deeper appreciation for Aotearoa’s unique wildlife and ecosystems.
DAY TWO B, L, D
This morning, we head to the mountains, visiting the alpine village of St Arnaud in Nelson Lakes. We stop at Lake Rotoiti to stretch our legs, where birds like tui and bellbirds gather around the large red beech trees. We then enjoy a mountain morning tea at the lovely Alpine Lodge property nestled amongst the impressive St Arnaud Range, taking in the breathtaking scenery. After morning tea, we continue to Melrose House, category 1 classified with Heritage New Zealand, it is one of the last surviving 'grand' historic homes in Nelson. Melrose House was built of heart rimu in classical Victorian style in 1879/80. We will have a delicious lunch followed by a historic talk and tour of Melrose House and gardens. We then travel back to the hotel, where some can relax for the afternoon. Others may explore Nelson's shops, museum, or the town itself just a 5 minute drive away. We'll meet again in the evening for social hour and dinner.
DAY THREE B, L, D
Today we board our coach and relax whilst taking in the lovely scenery of the coastal plains of Motueka and the mountain vistas atop of the Kahurangi Range as we travel to the stunning golden beaches & coastline of Abel Tasman. We will be exploring the glorious Abel Tasman coastal waters on the Dream Day Out cruise. Your Skipper provides interpretative commentary throughout your cruise to introduce you to the area’s natural highlights and fascinating history. We will enjoy a delicious lunch on-board soaking in the pristine views in a secluded bay of choice by the captain. After our fabulous day out and all that fresh sea air we 'll head back to put our feet up before gathering together again for dinner at a local restaurant.
DAY FOUR B, D
This morning begins with a visit to Te Waikoropupū “Pupu” Springs, the largest freshwater springs in the Southern Hemisphere, known for their exceptional clarity. Enjoy a peaceful walk along the boardwalks and take in the informative displays. Next, choose between browsing Takaka’s quirky shops and galleries or trying your luck fishing at Anatoki Salmon Farm. We then explore the fascinating limestone formations at Labyrinth Rocks before heading to Tussix for a guided garden tour. In late spring, Tussix showcases stunning Chatham Island forget-me-nots, along with iris, roses, and rhododendrons. A newer section of the garden features native plants and vintage farm equipment, highlighting the area's heritage. To finish the day, we visit Kiwi Spirit Distillery for a one-of-a-kind tasting experience. Guided by their passionate team, you’ll discover the stories and craft behind their uniquely New Zealand spirits—just in time for dinner at Ratanui Lodge.
DAY FIVE B, L, D
We begin the day with a sleep in and a leisurely breakfast in our rooms. Our adventure begins with a short walk to Salisbury Falls, a stunning riverside spot featured in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, where Tauriel and Legolas meet before heading to Lake-town. After taking in the cinematic scenery, enjoy lunch at the welcoming Courthouse Café in Collingwood. In the afternoon, set off on a guided Farewell Spit Tour, exploring sweeping sand dunes, dramatic coastal landscapes, and key stops including Puponga, Fossil Point, and the iconic lighthouse. At Cape Farewell—the northernmost tip of the South Island, look out for seals and pups basking on the rocks below the cliffs. With panoramic views and fascinating natural features, this tour is a true highlight. End the day with a relaxed dinner at the Collingwood Tavern before we return to our comfortable accommodation.
DAY SIX B, MT, L
Well, the time has flown by as it is time to head for home, but not before pausing for morning tea at Woolshed Canaan.
