This popular destination will be our base over the next few days.

After our adventure-filled day today, we will be taking things at a much more relaxed pace, basing our day around Hanmer Springs. We will provide a free shuttle to show you some local scenery.  Visit the "Famous Hot Pools" (available from 10am-7pm) or you may want to do your own thing today. Sit back and relax in the calming waters of the pools or choose from a range of indulgent body therapies on offer at Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa. Or if the action is more your style, there is an incredible range of walking and cycling tracks to explore. Add to this the restaurants, the boutique shopping you'll agree, this beautiful alpine village really has it all. This is a wonderful day to choose what you would like to do before part two of our journey to Cheviot Hills tomorrow.

DAY FOUR                                                              B, MT, L, D

We will leave Hanmer Springs to visit a museum collection at Culverden, then a fantastic drive along a 6km private track to Woodchester Station. The family living there experienced the first massive earthquake that struck on their property in November 2016 and went right through to Kaikoura, causing so much damage to the area.   This family featured on a recent Country Calendar program, and we get to see the EQ damage firsthand, and the new lake formed because of all this. Enjoy a picnic lunch in a delightful garden setting at the homestead. We journey from Woodchester into the magnificent Cheviot Hills Station that centres around the original plantings and the remains of the 57-room homestead built for William "Ready Money" Robinson, the colourful landowner of the Cheviot Hills estate. The reserve is a peaceful woodland of exotic and native trees, including many significant specimen trees, some of which are the most prominent examples of their species in New Zealand.

We travel on to Gore Bay and Port Robinson, viewing the clay cliff 'Cathedrals' as we head for the 4wd gravel Kaiwara Rd track through the working farmland of the Kaiwara Valley. It is a beautiful drive that provides a twisting and challenging journey through rock formations, native bush, several fords to cross before climbing over the high mountain range saddle, to stunning views of the Amuri Basin stretched out below us.  Arrive back in Hanmer Springs late afternoon.

DAY FIVE                                                                 B

Sadly, today is the day we head home. We will drive back to Christchurch, then we fly back up the Island to Tauranga, having just spent three great days in the glorious mountains.
