On our first day of adventure, we fly from Tauranga to Christchurch. Once we arrive, we will make our journey over to Hanmer Springs, a resort town in the Canterbury region of the South Island. It’s known for Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa, with its mineral waters. The surrounding mountains are home to trails and seasonal ski slopes. The nearby Conical Hill and Heritage Forest has a trail winding to a lookout point. To the south, rugged Waiau Gorge is known for its whitewater rapids and abundant salmon and trout. This popular destination will be our base over the next few days.

DAY TWO                                                               B, MT, L, D

Today we are in for a brilliant day touring through the iconic Molesworth Station. We'll visit century-old cob Homesteads, Historic sites and learn of the history and characters that made this high-country farm famous worldwide. It is an area which is rich in history, has outstanding natural features, and a stunning and dramatic landscape. At 180,476 hectares (approx. 500,000 Acres) roughly the same size as Stewart Island, it is New Zealand's largest farm. DAY THREE                                                            B, D

After our adventure-filled day today, we will be taking things at a much more relaxed pace, basing our day around Hanmer Springs. We will provide a free shuttle to show you some local scenery.  Visit the "Famous Hot Pools" (available from 10am-7pm) or you may want to do your own thing today. Take your time exploring this quaint village and its location. Sit back and relax in the calming waters of the pools or choose from a range of indulgent body therapies on offer at Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa. Or if the action is more your style, there is an incredible range of walking and cycling tracks to explore. Add to this the restaurants, the boutique shopping you'll agree, this beautiful alpine village really has it all. This is a wonderful day to choose what you would like to do before part two of our journey to Cheviot Hills tomorrow.

DAY FOUR                                                              B, MT, L, D

We will leave Hanmer Springs to visit a museum collection at Culverden, then a fantastic drive along a 6km private track to Woodchester Station. The family living there experienced the first massive earthquake that struck on their property in November 2016 and went right through to Kaikoura, causing so much damage to the area.   This family featured on a recent Country Calendar program, and we get to see the EQ damage firsthand, and the new lake formed because of all this. Enjoy a picnic lunch in a delightful garden setting at the homestead. We journey from Woodchester into the magnificent Cheviot Hills Station that centres around the original plantings and the remains of the 57-room homestead built for William "Ready Money" Robinson, the colourful landowner of the Cheviot Hills estate. The reserve is a peaceful woodland of exotic and native trees, including many significant specimen trees, some of which are the most prominent examples of their species in New Zealand.

We travel on to Gore Bay and Port Robinson, viewing the clay cliff 'Cathedrals' as we head for the 4wd gravel Kaiwara Rd track through the working farmland of the Kaiwara Valley. It is a beautiful drive that provides a twisting and challenging journey through rock formations, native bush, several fords to cross before climbing over the high mountain range saddle, to stunning views of the Amuri Basin stretched out below us.  Arrive back in Hanmer Springs late afternoon.
