Friday 22nd November DAY ONE MT, L, D
This morning we head south. Enjoy the scenery through to Taupo stopping at Lava Glass for lunch and a walk through the new sculpture park. We continue our way along the shores of Lake Taupo then across the Desert Road arriving at our destination and accommodation for the next two nights in Taihape. Once we’re settled in, we will head out for dinner in one of the local restaurants.
Saturday 23rd November DAY TWO B, MT, L, D
Away by 8am, we head to Waiouru and enter the Defence Force land, unfamiliar to most. Here we will meet our hosts for the day and board our Tour Coach for the next leg of the journey. Each year Kaimanawa Heritage Horses arrange a guided bus trip through the Waiouru Army Base land. This region is typically closed to the public, and we are privileged to be able to take this experience. See foals, mares, yearlings, and stallions in their family bands. There will also be a stop at the yards where the horses are mustered, and you will see the spectacular scenery where these horses run. The bus trip includes a talk and slide show on army activities and safety followed by a stopover at a scenic spot where a DOC Representative will address us about the land and its history. Lunch will be at the yards where the horses are mustered, and we will be given an insight into the mustering process. There will be Merchandise Stall at the muster yards - an opportunity to help with fundraising for the ongoing management of the horses if you so wish.
Sunday 24th November DAY THREE B, MT, L
Alas, all too soon it will be time to head home - armed with lovely photos and fond memories of wild places visited. We will make the journey along our North Island Alpine Highway, then around “The Great Lake” stopping for morning tea and lunch along the way, eventually arriving back in Tauranga.
