DAY ONE L, D
We fly into Claris where we are met by Steve our driver-guide and head off to explore the southern end of the island. We visit the famous ‘Milk, Honey & Grain Museum’ & the ‘Community Arts Village’ and have lunch at ‘My Fat Puku’, the new café at Claris. We take a stroll along Medlands Beach before checking in to our accommodation. At Great Barrier Lodge, overlooking Whangaparapara Harbour, this cosy island lodge dates from 1922 and has recently had a refurbishment. Take time to settle in and explore the lodge before joining your fellow travellers for dinner at the restaurant & bar.
DAY TWO B, L, D
After breakfast, this morning we tour up the island to Whangaparapara where we board ‘Sundancer’ for our spectacular coastal cruise. We look at the old Kauri Sawmill and Whaling Station sites before heading up the west coast & through the spectacular Broken Isles. Once through the Man O’ War Passage, we enjoy a scrumptious on-board lunch in the sheltered waters of the beautiful Port Fitzroy Harbour. After lunch, we disembark Sundancer and once back on the bus we visit the Glenfern Sanctuary - where we enjoy an informative presentation about the sanctuary which is home for kaka parrots, wood pigeons and banded rail etc. After the presentation talk, the group will be transferred to Sunset Rock for a fantastic panoramic view of Port Fitzroy Harbour and beyond. We travel back down the east coast by bus enjoying magnificent views of Rakitu Island, The Windy Canyon and Pacific Ocean Panoramas. We stop for a cuppa-and-cake at Awana where we enjoy an optional walk along this spectacular east coast surf beach.
DAY THREE B, L, D
Today we pack our togs & towels and head up to the Kaitoke Hot Springs. The walk to these natural & undeveloped springs is on a mainly level and sheltered gravelled track. The first 10-minutes of the trail meanders through a stunning ‘Gt Barrier Island Nikau Palm’ grove. It takes around 40 minutes to reach the pools… and another 40 minutes back to the bus. A certain level of fitness is required… We can offer alternative options for those that may find going all the way, a bit too much. After the walk, we enjoy a beautiful lunch at Angsana Thai Restaurant where we can explore the lovely grounds, local wildlife and a small Thai style gift shop.
DAY FOUR B, L
Steve our island guide picks us up this morning and we visit ‘Elephant’ (a new gallery) we explore around to the Tryphena Wharf and visit Shoal Bay Pottery. We call into Okupu Beach to check out the ancient Pohutukawa trees and then tour around to the ‘forgotten wharf’ at Blind Bay... a very scenic route with lovely old stone bridges and deep gullied streams. We enjoy our lodge supplied picnic lunch on the shores of a privately-owned beach before making our way back to ‘civilization’. For the adventurous, we enjoy a ‘wind in the hair’ joy ride on ‘Crazyhorse’… Steve’s Harley style 3 wheeled motorbike. We visit the Pigeon Post for gifts/souvenirs and tea/coffee etc at My Fat Puku Café before checking in for our flights home.
