Wednesday May 26th DAY ONE D
Join us as we head to Awhitu Peninsula to view the Manukau Heads Lighthouse. We will start our journey from your door, stopping for morning tea along the way. We’ll then meander over to the West Coast via Ngaruawahia on roads less travelled but offering stunning Karaka Tree and Nikau Palmed hill country. Our next port of call being the Nikau Caves and Cafe located in the heart of Waikaretu Valley amongst towering limestone cliffs. We’ll stop for lunch at this great country café. This is a unique setting as there are some fabulous underground caves located on the property, today we are only visiting the café and talking to the property owners. After our yummy lunch, we’ll head through to Port Waikato, stretch our legs on the black sand beach then on to our accommodation in Tuakau. Our evening meal will be in the onsite restaurant.
Thursday May 27th DAY TWO B, MT, L,
This morning we make our way to Waiuku and on to Awhitu Peninsula. We will stop for morning tea and talk at Pollok Arts & Crafts, a funky local gallery of work from artists of the area. Then we head on our way to the wonderfully historic Manukau Heads Lighthouse for a talk and tour on the Port Waikato shipwreck of the HMS Orpheus. This will bring the tragic story to life as we find out where it all happened. There is a short climb up some wide stairs to get to the lighthouse; alternatively, you are more than welcome to get on the courtesy vehicle provided by the lighthouse. Once we have been wowed, refreshed and informed we shall make our way to the nearby secluded bay of Tasman Lodge for a lovely lunch catered by local Gail Billing. The Lodge offers beautiful views of across the harbour. Alas, we then make our way home stopping for afternoon tea along the way.
